Compositora estadounidense. Estudió piano de niña y como compositora fue autodidacta hasta que ingresó en el American Conservatory. Después de sus primeras obras, influidas por Alexandr Skriabin, escribió varias piezas seriales asombrosas, entre ellas su Cuarteto de cuerdas (1931). En 1931 casó con el musicólogo Charles Seeger (n. 1886–m. 1979), convirtiéndose en la madrastra del cantante de música folclórica Pete Seeger. Posteriormente compuso poco, pero se convirtió en una influyente defensora de la música folclórica de EE.UU.
